Congratulations to Daniel Radcliffe for so effectively proving his kill as an actor because within seconds I had forgotten who he was, theatrically speaking and instead was caught up entirely in his character in the film.

The film is cleverly shot in predominantly grey tones, enforcing a sense of foreboding. The counterpoint between villagers' superstition and rationalistic explanations gave a psychological dichotomy to the film. To my embarrassment it took me a few moments to understand that the last couple of scenes were acts of kindness. I very strongly recommend the film to anyone who has not yet seen it. The quality of the DVD was good and the quality of the dvd was also good. It was well wrapped and delivered promptly.

And I repeat, this film shows Daniel Radcliffe is a good actor in his own right, having broken the mould of his character Harry Potter. I would now be far more willing to see him in new films on the grounds of his competence and plausibility.

Don't buy this thinking it will be a "film of the play or book ". It seems to be stretching a point to say that it is "based on" the Susan Hill novel, for apart from using the same characters and locations the way the story is played out, and in particular the final denouement, is completely different. Having said that, it's not a bad film in its own right.

I liked the slightly de-saturated colour and some of the camera work was quite inventive. Without giving too much away, for example, there's a moment where a candle is reflected in a doll's eyes and as the candle is carried across the room it looks as if the eyes are moving too.

But some of the supposedly-shocking "reveals" were just hackneyed and, in one instance, plain corny. Good to see Radcliffe in a "straight" role, although I think he could be stretched more as his talents mature. Some convincing supporting roles and atmospheric locations all combine to produce something that's worth watching, at least once. But if you really want to experience "The Woman in Black" as the novelist intended, go and see the stage play.

Not bad at all, and good for a few jolts, but overall it seemed a little weak. I think the pacing was off too. The book is very short, but it slowly builds the sense of dread and there seems more of a personal connection to the main character than was portrayed here. The acting is fine and Radcliffe does a decent job, but it was a bit of a disappointment overall.

Daniel Radcliffe plays Arthur Kipps, a young lawyer sent to sort out the affairs of a recently deceased woman. It is his last chance to prove himself to his employers, after his wife died during childbirth, and he's been grieving ever since.

After arriving in Cryphin Gifford, he is advised not to go out to Eel Marsh House, which the woman owned. After insisting that is why he is there, someone takes him. The house, only being accessible at low tide, after that being cut off completely.

Daniel Radcliffe is perfectly cast in this role, as Arthur Kipps, and plays it brilliantly. This version is truer to the book than the TV version, with Adrian Rawlins, which is now unavailable anywhere, and only second-hand copies exist, except for some pirates. This film was a long time coming, as I have said, apart from the TV version this book had never been filmed for the cinema before. If you like creepy ghost stories with lots of atmosphere, then you will certainly enjoy this film.

If you're into reading, then the book is also worth buying. Definition is pin sharp, and colours are natural. This blu ray transfer is presented in it's original 2. Highly recommended. I liked the Harry Potter films but felt a big question mark hung over Daniel Radcliffe's ability as an actor. That issue can be laid to rest as he proves himself fully in this well executed and very competent horror film. I'm pleased for him as it must have been far from an easy ride, his critics should be silenced by this.

It's nice to watch a horror film that is quintessentially British in its entirety, capturing the eerie essence of our lands long history. This did not scare me but I can't remember the last time a horror film did, I've been watching them since I was eight or nine.

It did make me jump though. On the whole it is subtle and atmospheric rather than in your face hysteria laden with gore and is all the better for it in my opinion.
