It is based on a short cartoon book of the same name by Michele Alexander and Jeannie Long. Romantic comedies are almost never about poor people. They're aspirational, like advertising, so the people in them must be richer, prettier, wittier and thinner than most of those watching.
That's why New York is the home of the romantic comedy and the advertising industry: they're in the same business. Love is for sale, or at least barter, in many of these films. Funnily enough, he plays an advertising executive, a cool dude who rides a motorcycle to a cool office, where he and his buddies play cool pool when they're not working which is most of the time.
He even has a cool name - Benjamin Barry. He's witty, charming, ambitious and super-confident. A bit of an arsehole really, but we go along because McConaughey is so sparkly on screen. We also know he'll be taken down a notch once boy meets girl. Kate Hudson, herself a sparkler, is that girl and she too has a cute name and cute job.
Andie Anderson is a columnist on Composure magazine, which features a rigid formula of diets, fashion, celebrities and up-beat personal advice, like "How to Feng Shui your Apartment". Andie writes these how-to columns. She has a brain she's not allowed to use and a degree in journalism from Columbia University, but no boyfriend. Silly plots are no bad thing in comedy, but there's a fine line between silly and stupid.
Kate Hepburn and Cary Grant looking for her pet leopard in the woods while singing "I can't give you anything but love, bay-bee" was superbly silly. Benjamin betting his boss that he can make any woman fall madly in love with him in 10 days is heading for stupid, because it's not set up very credibly. His agency is angling for a big account with a major diamond manufacturer; his boss Robert Klein wants to give the pitch to two luscious office vamps, because the diamond tycoon likes ladies; the two Judys, as they're known, say Benjamin can't do it because he knows nothing about romance, women or diamonds.
He brags, so the boss agrees to give him the pitch if he can make their choice of girl love him this guy runs a successful ad agency making such decisions? Across a crowded bar, the two Judys Michael Michele and Shalom Harlow select the gorgeous Andie, knowing that her next story requires her to hook a new guy and drive him away in 10 days by doing all the things guys hate. Benjamin doesn't know what he's in for.
It's a variation on A Midsummer Night's Dream , without the poetry, and he's the ass. Casting people as pretty as these two takes the movie only so far. You still need good writing, and there's only enough to make it clear that the script wasn't ready. The cliches abound, amid some good fast dialogue that's trying to emulate screwball comedy. Andie starts her gender war by moving soft toys into his apartment and filling his bathroom cabinet with sanitary towels, because, you know, all guys hate to be confronted with menstruation.
She interrupts his regular boys-only card game with cucumber sandwiches and a request for them not to smoke. She constructs elaborate schemes to piss him off, but he just grins and bears it, because diamonds are a boy's best friend. Both of them are liars, but his lies seem more callous, because he's prepared to toy with her deepest emotions. His venality isn't very cute, in fact, one reason the movie plods. Another is the old-fashioned idea that women lose men by their own irritating actions, or by trying to tame the beast within, rather than through anything mutual.
