This is less of a review and more of a first impression as this manga is relatively new and currently only has seven translated chapters out.

As a form of mass media, it reinforces and perpetuates the social norms and ideologies of its native environment and is therefore worthy of critical analysis, especially pertinent as it is increasingly consumed abroad. However, the reoccurring themes such as eroticism, costuming, and self-sacrifice resultantly send mixed signals. I argue that the inclusion of these tropes, which appeal to the male gaze and adult viewership, within this empowerment fantasy subgenre reflects a negotiation of gender roles reflective of changing Japanese hegemonic femininity.

Present day standards for this sequence hail directly from Sailor Moon, who famously had a two-minute transformation sequence. In her final form, Usagi dons a shortened version of the iconic Japanese high school uniform.

The presence of the male gaze is therefore not subverted by merely having strong female characters, as the incorporation of highly suggestive transformation sequences can easily satisfy scopophilia. Magical girls anime places immense importance on physical appearance. In other words, even when completely unnecessary to the plot, the transformation sequence is, in itself, substantial to the subgenre. Costuming does admittedly play a significant role in the general superhero universe, however the magical girl outfit framework seemingly implies power can only come when interlinked with a specific image of feminine gender performance.

The message is that magical girls can only and will only fight evil forces while in mini skirts and dresses. This criticism extends beyond the physical. Compared to female heroes who are cute juvenile girls, Saito continues, women in the enemy force, whether in magical girl programs or the Power Rangers series, are adult women wearing heavy makeup and obsessed with careerism: they are, simply put, the women who failed to be a wife or a mother.

According to these arguments, the seemingly empowered girl heroes in anime covertly teach girls to pursue fashion, romance, and consumption until marriage and, once married, to stay at home as a good wife and mother.

Her comments apply to all the previously mentioned series. She helps take care of her father and older brother without complaint. The importance of magical girl heroines still demonstrating traditional gender expectations is interlinked with the theme of self-sacrifice. In Sally the Witch, this means returning to Astoria; in Card Captor Sakura, this means forfeiting her power completely.

If the ability to use magic is interpreted as a form of liberation, it is then rendered harmless because of its temporary status. Saito, Magical girl anime always takes place in adolescence, seemingly implying that the agency tied to magical power is happily given up to enter the adult world.

In other words, the ultimate goal for the protagonist is still being a Good Woman. There is difficulty in determining whether magical girl anime is empowering towards women or not.

There are two satisfying and highly incompatible poles. One is that the usage of majority female characters within a quest story is completely empowering towards young women. These contesting claims coexist in a paradoxical dualism as magical girl anime is loaded with different appeals for different viewers. Magical Girl media is an anomaly in the media landscape for its focus on female characters and their action packed adventures.

The assumption that the subgenre feminist media is premature, just as the assumption it is not is premature.
