I pushed her away by being needy

All I get is a quick text or a rushed e-mail from you every few days. I know you are busy and I know you have Bethany, but hello? You have no idea what this summer has been like. Ever since we were kids we pushed away every single person that could possibly have been our friend. We blocked people until there was only me and you. You have always had someone. You always had me. I always had you. Now you have Bethany and I have no one. Now I feel like those other people that used to try to become our friend, that tried to push their way into our circle but were met by turned backs.

And that well. This was supposed to be our summer of fun. What happened? Or does the best friend bond disappear as soon as you meet somebody else? I liked things the way they were. We used to be best friends. Yet where are those people now? How could someone who was your bridesmaid 20 years ago not even be someone who you are on talking terms with now?

He studied with the man for five years! I want us to be best friends forever, Alex. Maybe our time has come and gone. Maybe your time is now meant to be spent with Bethany.

No one wants me. You have friends — or at least people who would like to be your friend. You pushed yourself away. You just have to accept the things that are out of your hands and try to take care of yourself. We walk around happily with these invisible veils hanging down over our faces.

The world is kind of blurry, and we like it that way. But sometimes our veils are pushed away for a few moments, like there's a wind blowing it from our faces. And when the veil lifts, we can see the world as it really is, just for those few seconds before it settles down again.

We see all the beauty, and cruelty, and sadness, and love. But mostly we are happy not to. Some people learn to lift the veil themselves.

Then they don't have to depend on the wind anymore. You create rules, build walls, push people away, lie to yourself and ignore true feelings. That is not simplifying things. But we still wake up in the morning and take care of our children, our husband, our lover, our boss, our employees, our students, those dozens of people who make an ordinary day come to life. And we often have a smile on our face and a word of encouragement, because no one can explain their loneliness to others, especially when we are always in good company.

But this loneliness exists and eats away at the best parts of us because we must use all our energy to appear happy, even though we will never be able to deceive ourselves. But we insist, every morning, on showing only the rose that blooms, and keep the thorny stem that hurts us and makes us bleed hidden within. I wait for a pure and virtuous knight, in all his glory, to come defeat it and push it into the abyss for good, but that knight never comes.

Yet we cannot lose hope. The thorns inside us will grow larger and more overwhelming, yet we cannot give up halfway. Everyone is looking to see the final outcome, as though life were a huge game of chess. Or we go out for dinner or lunch with people who have nothing to do with our lives and spend the whole time talking about things that are of no importance.

We even manage to distract ourselves for a while with drink and celebration, but the dragon lives on until the people who are close to us see that something is wrong and begin to blame themselves for not making us happy. They ask what the problem is. Please, leave me alone, because I have no more tears to cry or heart left to suffer.

But they insist that this is just a rough patch or depression because they are afraid to use the real and damning word: loneliness. Meanwhile, we continue to relentlessly pursue the only thing that would make us happy: the knight in shining armor who will slay the dragon, pick the rose, and clip the thorns.

Many claim that life is unfair. Others are happy because they believe that this is exactly what we deserve: loneliness, unhappiness.

But one day those who are blind begin to see. Those who are sad are comforted. Those who suffer are saved. The knight arrives to rescue us, and life is vindicated once again. Still, you have to lie and cheat, because this time the circumstances are different. A dream is always risky, for there is a price to pay.

That price is death by stoning in some countries, and in others it could be social ostracism or indifference.

But there is always a price to pay. You are not an adulterous man, tolerated and often even admired, but an adulterous woman, one who is Nash thought about that for a moment, stroking Small's neck with great deliberation, as if the fate of the Dells depended on that smooth, careful movement. Second, love is stupid. It has nothing to do with reason. You love whomever you love. Against all reasons I loved my father. He stroked Small's nose. And I love my brother, more than I ever realized before you came along.

You can't help whom you love, Lady. Nor can you know what it's liable to cause you to do. Surprised she sat back from him and studied his face, soft with shadows and light.

She saw a part of him she hadn't seen before. You did those things out of love for your brother. I'm like a barbed creature. I push everyone I love away. So why do I do this? Why do I push away the people I love?

What is so very wrong with me? Because you should. The Spoon Theory was created by a friend of mine, Christine Miserandino, to explain the limits you have when you live with chronic illness. Most healthy people have a seemingly infinite number of spoons at their disposal, each one representing the energy needed to do a task.

You get up in the morning. You take a shower. But if you are sick or in pain, your exhaustion changes you and the number of spoons you have. Autoimmune disease or chronic pain like I have with my arthritis cuts down on your spoons.

Depression or anxiety takes away even more. Maybe you only have six spoons to use that day. Sometimes you have even fewer. What is wrong with you? Then you get more depressed and the next day you wake up with even fewer spoons and so you try to make spoons out of caffeine and willpower but that never really works. Really, the only people you should be comparing yourself to would be people who make you feel better by comparison.

To say no. To push myself, but not too hard. To try to enjoy the amazingness of life while teetering at the edge of terror and fatigue. I mean, you of all people, you of the eternal iPod-hoodie combo.

Guys are taught that pushing a girl up against a wall is romance. Sex is easy; you can do it with anyone, yourself, with batteries. Romance is when someone you like walks into a room and they take your breath away. Romance is when two people are dancing and they fit together perfectly.

8 Silly Things You Do Over And Over Again To Push Guys Away

It may seem that "men are from Mars" and "women are from Venus," and as a man with many female friends and many women clients, I'm here to share both sides of the conversation. When you feel hurt, or misunderstood, or scared as hell in your relationship, sometimes the last thing you want to do is take responsibility for your own emotions, and for the way you feel.
