I have the option of traveling to Dubai for a week for work, and am wondering how safe it is for an American woman traveling alone. Plenty of Americans live or visit Dubai as tourists including women without any issues. Should not be a worry. Many thousands of people, of all nationalities, and including women! If you have particular concerns, then assuming you are not self-employed and chose specifically to accept an assignment there but are being posted there for the week by your employer perhaps you could take advice from the employer who is sending you to the UAE..

I can honestly say, I have never encountered any problems or issues and have felt far safer in Dubai then I have where I live in London UK. The immigration officer will know you are American and one assumes that's quite safe, the hotel staff may know you are American and the reception desk will definitely but other than that you will be safely invisible in amongst all of the several thousand expat women that live there and the several million women that holiday or pass through there every year.

It is just as safe for you travelling alone as it is for any other women that have travelled alone to Dubai or lived there.

However, it is a common question for female travellers regardless of Nationality so you may find this section of the top question worth a read. I live in the North West of England, about 35 miles from Manchester. I know where I would feel safest right now and it isn't the UK. I'm an Australian lady and whilst I'm not alone this time I've travelled here alone before.

Absolutely nothing to worry about My wife is quite ''timid'' travelling, and she feels comfortable travelling around Dubai. There are female only taxis which we took from the airport; there is a female only car on the metro. I am a single woman that lives in Dubai and I feel extremely safe. There are many nationalities that live here and you will be exposed to different cultures and people have different ways of doing things I will NEVER get used to people trying to get into a lift before they have let those exiting out but these are small issues compared to the biggest safety concerns for solo females.

As with travel anywhere in the world, ensure you have an extensive travel insurance policy medical is expensive here , save your Embassy Number in your phone as well as the local emergency numbers Police Emergency- , Police Non Emergency- , Ambulance- , Fire I just need to correct Latimer on one point.

It's not several thousand expat women. It's several hundred thousand expat women who live in Dubai. Actually, probably even in the millions when you factor in all nationalities.

The UAE is one of the safest countries in the world. But this is a small and easily avoided part of the city. There's also a growing American expat community that numbers in the tens of thousands, including many American women.

While I now travel with my husband, I have spent the last 7 years travelling alone, and as a woman I am a huge advocate for travelling solo.
